iPhone warranty claims: check coverage and arrange a repair

Check your iPhone warranty, prepare a repair request and keep the right records. A US guide to coverage, service options and what to ask Apple.

Start an iPhone warranty claim by checking the device's coverage and arranging service through Apple. Describe what happens, when it began and any damage accurately. A coverage date is useful, but Apple still needs to assess the particular fault.

What does the included iPhone warranty cover?

Apple's US limited warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship during normal use for one year from the original retail purchase. Accidental damage, liquid damage and ordinary wear are excluded; a defective battery is different from a battery aging normally. Other consumer-law rights may apply. These are iPhone terms, not a statement about every Apple product. Apple's US warranty.

Keep the included warranty and any paid AppleCare plan as separate records. If you have paid coverage, use the actual plan attached to this phone when discussing the repair.

Start with the official service page

Apple's iPhone repair page links coverage checks, estimates and service arrangements. In-person and mail options are available, subject to location and parts. Get the applicable estimate before authorizing a charge.

Our suggested preparation is a short fault note:

  • Identify the iPhone model and keep its serial number available for the official support channel.
  • Record the first date you noticed the problem and whether it happens consistently.
  • List troubleshooting you actually completed and the result.
  • Have the purchase receipt and any earlier repair reference ready.

For example, “The phone restarts while charging” gives support a symptom to investigate. “The motherboard is defective” introduces a diagnosis you may not be able to establish.

Before handing over the phone

Follow Apple's service-appointment preparation instructions for your chosen service route. Use the current instructions rather than an old checklist copied from another device.

Our record-keeping suggestion: photograph the phone's visible condition, note which accessories you hand over, and retain the appointment or shipping reference. Ask what happens if inspection changes the estimated cost. Keep that answer with the case.

After the repair

Apple states that its service and replacement parts are guaranteed for 90 days or the remaining Apple warranty, whichever is longer; applicable consumer rights and AppleCare benefits are additional. Save the repair record and check the date that applies to your device. Apple's service guarantee.

Does a warranty claim guarantee a free replacement?

No. Ask Apple to confirm the applicable remedy and any charge for the assessed problem. A request for service is not an approval.

Should I wait until the warranty is nearly over?

Our advice is to report an actual problem promptly and keep its acknowledgment. See when to file a warranty claim.
